IFTA license renewal and decals for 2027

An IFTA license runs for one calendar year and the decals change every year. Here is when to renew, what has to be clean before your base state will renew you, and where the new decals go.

Only 2027 decals are valid. Without them: trip permit, citation, or both.

The license itself is valid through December 31. The two-month grace period covers displaying the new credentials, not renewing late: many base jurisdictions only give it to carriers whose renewal was in before January 1. R610, R655.200

What must be clean before you can renew

  • Every return filed — including quarters with no miles. R345.100
  • Every balance paid — tax, penalties and interest. R345.100
  • License in good standing — not revoked, suspended or canceled, and no open issues with the base jurisdiction. R345.100
  • Real interstate travel. A base jurisdiction may refuse to renew a carrier that reported only home-state miles for 3 or more quarters in a row. R345.300

Some jurisdictions renew qualifying carriers automatically and just send the new credentials. R345.200

Decals and the license in the truck

  • Two decals per qualified vehicle, on the outside of both sides of the cab. R605, R625
  • A copy of the license in every truck — paper or an electronic image. Every member jurisdiction has to accept either. R620
  • Decals stay with the truck they were issued for. Moving them to another vehicle needs the base jurisdiction's permission. R640
  • Decals not here yet? Many base jurisdictions issue a 30-day temporary decal permit, carried in the truck, for a licensee in good standing. R650
  • Missing license or decals can mean buying a trip permit at the roadside, a citation, or both. R660

Before you file the renewal

  1. File Q3 (due November 2, 2026) and pay anything owed.
  2. Check the fleet list: add new trucks and remove sold ones so you order the right number of decals.
  3. Renew online with your base jurisdiction early in December — decals can take weeks to arrive.
  4. Put the new decals on and a copy of the 2027 license in each truck as soon as they come, from November 1 at the earliest.
  5. Keep the receipts and trip records for 4 years: the next audit can reach back that far. P510
